If you are just starting with SEO, Semrush can look intimidating. There are dozens of tools, lots of charts, and pricing that isn't cheap. But it is also one of the most widely used SEO platforms, and in 2026 it has added AI search visibility, which tracks how your brand shows up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI results.

This review explains Semrush in plain English for beginners. It covers what the main tools do, how the current plans are structured, how to get the free trial using Semrush's official process, and whether the price makes sense for a small site or a new blog. It is research-based. We did not run a long-term hands-on test. We relied on Semrush's official pricing page, knowledge base, and blog, checked on October 31, 2026.

Quick verdict

  • Semrush is worth it if you run a business site, an affiliate site, or client sites and will actually use keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, and site audits every week.
  • Start free. Semrush has a free account (no credit card, limited daily reports) and a 7-day free trial on paid plans.
  • Starter ($199/month, or $165.17/month billed annually) is the plan most beginners will look at. It covers 5 projects, 500 tracked keywords, and AI visibility tracking.
  • Skip it for now if you publish a few posts a month on a hobby blog. The free plan plus Google Search Console may be enough.

What Semrush does (in plain English)

  • Keyword research. Find out what people search for, how often, and how hard it is to rank. This is where most beginners spend their time.
  • Competitor analysis. Enter a competitor's domain and see which keywords bring them traffic and which pages earn backlinks.
  • Position Tracking. Track your rankings for chosen keywords every day.
  • Site Audit. Crawl your site and flag technical issues such as broken links, slow pages, and missing tags. On Starter and above, Semrush lists an "AI-ready" Site Audit.
  • AI Visibility. This is newer. On Starter, Semrush says it tracks visibility across Google Search, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, with 50 prompts tracked daily.
  • MCP access. Starter also lists MCP access, so you can connect Semrush data to AI assistants that support it.

Semrush is a research and monitoring platform. If you mainly want help writing and optimizing articles, a content tool may suit you better. Compare the options in our Surfer SEO vs Frase guide.

How to get the Semrush free trial

Based on Semrush's official knowledge base and free-trial page (checked October 31, 2026):

  1. Go to Semrush's pricing or free-trial page and choose a plan to trial. The SEO + AI Search plans offer a 7-day free trial.
  2. Create an account and enter a payment card. Semrush says it charges a small nominal amount to check the card is valid and refunds it immediately. You won't be charged until the trial ends.
  3. Use the tools. Trials give access to the features of the plan you picked. Exports follow that plan's limits.
  4. Cancel before day 7 if you don't want to continue. Semrush says the trial converts automatically to the paid plan you selected unless you cancel.
  5. Other toolkits have separate trials. Semrush says each toolkit trial (Local, Content, Social, Advertising, and others) can be activated once per account, at different times. The Agency Partners Platform add-on has a 14-day trial.

Tip: Put a calendar reminder on day 6. Also note that Semrush's standalone free-trial landing page still showed older plan names (Pro and Guru) with different prices when we checked. Confirm the plan and price on the checkout screen before you start the trial.

If you only want to look around without a card, the Free plan includes 1 demo project and 10 reports per day across key tools, according to Semrush.

Semrush pros

  • All-in-one. Keyword research, competitor data, rank tracking, audits, and AI visibility are all in one login.
  • AI search tracking. Starter includes prompt tracking across major AI assistants, which many classic SEO tools don't offer.
  • Clear upgrade path. Limits roughly triple from Starter to Pro+, and Pro+ adds historical data and keyword cannibalization reports.
  • Generous trials. You get a 7-day trial per toolkit plus a real free plan.
  • Learning resources. Semrush publishes a large knowledge base, blog, and Academy courses for beginners.

Semrush cons

  • Expensive for hobbyists. $199/month is a big commitment for a new blog.
  • Add-ons add up. Extra users on SEO plans start at $45/month, according to Semrush, and toolkits such as Traffic & Market cost extra.
  • Learning curve. There are many reports, so beginners can feel overwhelmed.
  • Plan changes. Semrush has renamed and restructured plans in recent years, so older tutorials may reference Pro and Guru instead of Starter and Pro+.

Who Semrush is for

  • Small business owners who want to know which keywords and competitors matter.
  • Affiliate and niche site builders doing serious keyword research. Many pair Semrush with a content optimizer.
  • Freelancers and small agencies managing up to 5 sites (Starter) or 15 (Pro+).
  • Brands worried about AI search that want to see how ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity mention them.

Not ideal for: casual bloggers, or anyone who won't log in at least weekly.
