Content optimization tools have changed a lot. A few years ago, Surfer SEO and Frase were mostly about one thing: helping you write articles that rank on Google. In 2026 both have rebuilt themselves around a second goal, AI search visibility. That means being cited by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and other AI answer engines.
This comparison is research-based. We did not run a long hands-on test of either tool. We read each company's official pricing page on October 30, 2026 and compared plans, limits, and positioning. Both companies update plans often. Check current pricing before buying.

Surfer positions itself as "the most complete platform for AI Search Optimization." Its main features, according to the pricing page FAQ:
Surfer says it has 150,000+ customers in 159+ countries, works in all languages, and analyzes "over 500 web and AI signals."
Surfer accepts credit and debit cards, and bank transfer for yearly plans only. It does not accept PayPal. Annual plans are charged upfront, and credits reset yearly on annual billing.
Frase now calls itself "the content operating system for AI search." Its pitch is a loop: listen to what visitors ask, research and draft content, publish it, audit existing pages, and fix pages that start slipping.
Key features listed on the pricing page:
| Plan | Yearly | Monthly | Key limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $39/mo | $49/mo | 1 seat, 1 site, 10 articles, 50 audit pages, 25 AI generations, 20 AI prompts, Content Guard on 10 pages |
| Professional | $103/mo | $129/mo | 3 seats, 5 sites, 40 articles, 250 audit pages, 100 AI generations, 50 prompts, 75 guarded pages |
| Scale | $239/mo | $299/mo | 5 seats, 10 domains, 100 articles, 1,000 audit pages, 350 AI generations, 75 prompts, 300 guarded pages, client reports |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | White-label, client portal, SSO/SAML, SLA |
Overages: Starter simply stops at its limits, so there's no surprise bill. Professional and Scale can turn on pay-as-you-go. On Professional, that's $5 per extra article, $0.50 per audit page, and $0.25 per AI prompt. On Scale, it's $4, $0.40, and $0.20. Extra seats are $29/month on Professional and Scale.
Trial: 7 days free, no credit card. It gives you Professional's features with capped quantities (5 articles, 50 audit pages, 25 AI prompts, up to 3 seats).
Frase also says plainly that it "will not promise you a ranking or a citation inside a 7-day window." We appreciate that honesty.
Surfer's Content Editor and Content Score are its signature. Many SEO teams already know them. Frase offers SEO and GEO scoring too, but it's moving toward an end-to-end agent that researches, drafts, and publishes for you. If you like to write yourself with live guidance, Surfer fits. If you want more done for you, Frase fits.
Both track brand mentions in AI answers. Surfer offers daily refresh on higher plans and a standalone analytics plan. Frase includes AI Visibility on every plan, but the number of engines grows with the tier.
Frase is cheaper at the bottom ($39 vs $49 per month, both billed yearly) and publishes clear monthly and yearly prices. Surfer's Standard ($99 yearly) and Frase Professional ($103 yearly) cost about the same, so compare seats and limits. At the top, Surfer's Peace of Mind ($299/month billed yearly) offers uncapped optimization, while Frase Scale ($239 yearly) is article-capped at 100 per month.
Surfer gives more seats. Frase Scale adds client-ready reports and multi-site management, but white-labeling is Enterprise only.
Surfer: SEO agencies, in-house content teams, editors who want live writing guidance, and brands that mainly want AI visibility tracking.
Frase: solo bloggers, affiliate site owners, freelancers, small marketing teams, and anyone who wants research-to-publish automation at a lower price.
At entry level, yes. Frase Starter is $39/month billed yearly ($49 monthly), and Surfer Discovery is $49/month billed yearly (checked October 30, 2026).
We didn't find a clear free trial on Surfer's pricing page on our check date. Check current offers on surferseo.com. Frase offers a 7-day free trial with no credit card.
Both do. Surfer tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, and other models. Frase tracks ChatGPT and Google AI on Starter, adds Perplexity on Professional, and adds Claude and Gemini on Scale.
No. No tool can guarantee Google rankings or AI citations. Frase says so directly on its pricing page.
Surfer lets you turn off auto-renewal and keep access until the paid period ends. Frase lets you downgrade at the next cycle. Check each vendor's terms for refunds.
For a single affiliate site on a budget, Frase Starter is a strong pick. For a portfolio with many writers, Surfer's seats and Content Editor may scale better.
Surfer and Frase have both evolved into AI search optimization platforms, and both are credible choices. Surfer is the established optimization standard with deeper tracking and more seats. Frase is the more affordable, automation-heavy option with built-in publishing and a no-card trial. Try Frase's trial, compare it with Surfer's Content Editor, and choose based on how much of the writing you want to do yourself.
