If you want a talking-head video without booking a studio, two names come up again and again: HeyGen and Synthesia. Both turn a script into a video presented by an AI avatar. Both offer voice cloning, dubbing, and custom avatars of yourself. On paper they look nearly the same. In practice they are built for different buyers.

This guide is research-based. We did not run a long hands-on test of either product. We read each company's official pricing and plan pages on October 30, 2026, compared what they include, and noted where the details are unclear. AI video pricing changes often, so treat every number here as a snapshot and confirm it on the vendor's site before you pay.

Quick verdict

  • Choose HeyGen if you are a creator, marketer, or small business that wants lots of video output, long videos, fast turnaround, 4K export, and access to newer generative video models in one subscription.
  • Choose Synthesia if you work in corporate training, internal communications, or L&D, and you care most about a polished, business-first workflow, LMS-friendly features, and a strong compliance story.
  • On a tight budget? Both have free plans. Synthesia's cheapest paid plan ($19/month monthly, or $14/month billed yearly as listed in October 2026) costs less than HeyGen Creator ($29/month, or $24/month billed annually). HeyGen's free plan caps each video at 1 minute, while Synthesia's Basic plan includes 10 minutes of video a month.

HeyGen vs Synthesia — snapshot: price from, best for and key strengths, from the figures in this article

What HeyGen is

HeyGen describes itself as an AI video generator for creators and businesses. Its pricing page lists a growing set of avatar engines (Avatar III, IV, and V), a "Video Agent" that builds videos from prompts, HeyGen's own voice engine, and access to third-party generative models on higher plans (the Pro plan mentions Seedance 2.5, VEO 3.1, and Nano Banana).

In plain terms, HeyGen is trying to be an all-in-one AI video studio. Beyond a presenter reading a script, you can create cinematic avatar scenes, generate B-roll, translate videos with lip-sync, and export in 4K on Pro.

HeyGen pricing (checked Oct 30, 2026)

  • Free – $0/month: 3 videos a month (watermarked), up to 1 minute each, access to Avatar IV and Video Agent, one custom video avatar, 500+ stock presenters, 30+ languages.
  • Creator – $29/month ($24/month annually): 600 credits, 1080p export, no HeyGen branding, custom avatar with your own voice, 175+ languages and dialects, up to about 10 hours of text to speech, credits roll over one month.
  • Pro – from $49/month: 1,000 credits, 4K export, videos up to 30 minutes, faster processing, cinematic avatars, more model access. HeyGen says Pro tiers scale from 1,000 credits at $49 up to 100,000 credits at $4,300 per month.
  • Business – $149/month plus $20 per extra seat: 1,500 credits, videos up to 60 minutes, 5 custom avatars, shared workspace, SAML/SSO, brand kit, SCORM export, and integrations with Zapier, Make, HubSpot, and n8n.
  • Enterprise – contact sales.

HeyGen bills video creation in credits. How many credits a video uses depends on the model, length, and complexity. HeyGen does not publish one simple "credits per minute" number for every feature, so check current pricing and the in-app estimate before you start a large project.

HeyGen pros

  • Generous feature ceiling: 4K, 30-minute videos on Pro, and several generative models in one plan.
  • Large stock avatar and voice library (700+ avatars and 1,000+ voices listed on paid plans).
  • 175+ languages and dialects for translation on paid plans.
  • Credit rollover softens the "use it or lose it" problem.
  • Business plan includes SSO and SCORM at a published price.

HeyGen cons

  • Credit-based billing makes costs harder to predict for heavy users.
  • Free plan videos are capped at 1 minute and watermarked.
  • The fast pace of feature releases means plan details change often. What you read today may be renamed next quarter.

What Synthesia is

Synthesia is a London-based AI video platform aimed squarely at businesses. Its pricing page focuses on training, onboarding, and internal communication: SCORM export, interactive surveys, roleplay sessions for learners, a multilingual video player, bulk personalization from a spreadsheet, and an AI screen recorder. It also highlights SOC 2 and GDPR compliance and content moderation on every video.

Synthesia also runs on a shared credit pool. Its FAQ explains the math more clearly than most: a typical finished minute uses about 100 credits, dubbing costs 80 credits per minute with lip-sync and 40 without, and each survey response beyond the included three costs 350 credits. Synthesia's AI video agent, Syren, typically uses 1,000–2,000 credits per one-minute video.

Synthesia pricing (checked Oct 30, 2026)

  • Basic – $0/month: 10 minutes of Studio video or dubbing per month, 3 survey responses, 500 credits, templates and libraries; videos carry a watermark.
  • Starter – $19/month billed monthly (a promotion showed $9 for the first month); $14/month billed yearly ($168/year). 1,250 credits/month on monthly billing, 125+ avatars, 3 guests.
  • Pro – $89/month billed monthly (promotion: $49 first month); $59/month billed yearly ($708/year). 6,000 credits/month, 180+ avatars, 5 personal avatars, 5 guests. Pro has several credit levels.
  • Enterprise – custom: 240+ avatars, unlimited personal avatars, SAML/SSO, SCORM export, dedicated CSM, 140+ languages.

Synthesia says unused monthly credits do not roll over. Credits you buy separately are valid for 12 months. A Studio Express-1 avatar is a paid add-on listed at $1,000/year for annual plan users.

Synthesia pros

  • Clear credit math published in the FAQ, which makes budgeting easier.
  • Built for training teams: SCORM, surveys, roleplays, branching, and a multilingual player.
  • Strong compliance and moderation messaging for regulated companies.
  • Lower entry price than HeyGen for light users.
  • Ten free minutes a month on the Basic plan is a useful sandbox.

Synthesia cons

  • Fewer stock avatars on self-serve plans than HeyGen lists.
  • Full HD export is the listed download resolution. We found no 4K option on self-serve plans.
  • No rollover of monthly credits.
  • SSO and several enterprise controls require a custom Enterprise contract.

Head-to-head: the differences that matter

1. Pricing and predictability

For a solo user making a few short videos a month, Synthesia Starter is cheaper. For high-volume creators, the answer depends on credit use. HeyGen's rollover and tiered Pro plans can work out well if your output swings from month to month. Synthesia's per-minute guidance (about 100 credits per finished minute) is easier to forecast.

2. Output quality and formats

This article cannot give you a lab-grade quality score. Avatar realism is subjective, and both companies ship new models often. What we can say from the plan pages: HeyGen offers 4K export on Pro and higher plans and longer maximum video lengths. Synthesia lists Full HD downloads. If you publish to large screens or YouTube in 4K, that matters.

3. Languages and localization

HeyGen lists 175+ languages and dialects on paid plans. Synthesia lists 70+ languages for dubbing on self-serve plans and 140+ on Enterprise, with voice and accent preservation and optional lip-sync (which doubles dubbing credits). Both are strong for localization. HeyGen covers more languages at lower tiers.

4. Teams, security, and LMS

Synthesia was built for L&D and it shows: surveys, roleplays, interactive CTAs, branching, SCORM, and a multilingual player. HeyGen's Business plan now includes SCORM export, LMS integrations, SSO, and a brand kit at a published price ($149/month plus seats). That is a real advantage if you want enterprise-style features without a sales call.

5. Creative range

HeyGen leans into generative video: cinematic avatars, third-party video models, and image generation. Synthesia offers B-roll generation through third-party models too, but its focus stays on clear, professional business video.

Who each tool is for

HeyGen is best for:

  • YouTubers and social media creators who want avatar-led content at volume
  • Marketers making ads, product explainers, and localized campaigns
  • Small teams that want SSO and SCORM without enterprise negotiation
  • Anyone who needs 4K or videos longer than a few minutes

Synthesia is best for:

  • Corporate L&D and HR teams building training libraries
  • Companies with strict compliance and moderation needs
  • Teams that want simple, predictable per-minute credit math
  • Light users who want the cheapest paid entry point

How to choose in five minutes

  1. Write down how many finished minutes of video you need per month.
  2. Decide whether you need 4K, SSO, or SCORM.
  3. Start a free plan on both and make the same 60-second script.
  4. Compare avatar realism, voice quality, and editing speed for your content.
  5. Upgrade the one that fits. Use monthly billing first if you're unsure, then switch to annual once you know your volume.

FAQ

Is HeyGen cheaper than Synthesia?

Not at the entry level. As of October 30, 2026, Synthesia Starter is $19/month monthly ($14/month yearly), while HeyGen Creator is $29/month ($24/month yearly). At higher tiers, value depends on how many credits you burn per video, so compare your own usage.

Which tool has more languages?

HeyGen lists 175+ languages and dialects on paid plans. Synthesia lists 70+ dubbing languages on self-serve plans and 140+ on Enterprise.

Can I create an avatar of myself?

Yes, on both. HeyGen's Free plan includes one custom video avatar, and paid plans expand that. Synthesia includes personal avatars on paid plans (5 on Pro) and unlimited on Enterprise, subject to fair use.

Do unused credits roll over?

HeyGen: yes, for one extra month on monthly plans, and they accumulate until renewal on annual plans. Synthesia: no, monthly credits reset, though separately purchased credits last 12 months.

Which is better for corporate training?

Synthesia has the deeper training feature set (surveys, roleplays, branching, multilingual player). HeyGen Business also offers SCORM and LMS integrations, so trial both if you're an L&D buyer.

Can I use these videos commercially?

Paid plans on both are meant for business use, but license terms can change. Read each vendor's current terms of service before you publish ads or client work.

Conclusion

HeyGen and Synthesia are both mature, capable AI avatar platforms, and you won't go badly wrong with either. The difference is focus. HeyGen is the creative, high-output studio: more avatars, more languages, 4K, longer videos, and the newest generative models. Synthesia is the business-first training platform: clear credit math, L&D features, and a compliance-heavy pitch.

Our research-based recommendation is to try both free plans with the same short script. Pick HeyGen if you are a creator or marketer. Pick Synthesia if you are building training content for an organization. Prices and features here were checked on October 30, 2026. Check current pricing on each official site before you subscribe.
